Several days post the devastating hurricane struck western Jamaica with record force, locals in affected areas along the coast are continuing to hope for relief.

Many of the roads are blocked by debris and people are isolated with scarce supplies, no power or running water, and no idea of when normalcy will return.

Rising Death Toll

Authorities confirmed on recently that no fewer than 28 individuals in Jamaica have died since the hurricane hit as a powerful maximum-level cyclone with nearly 300 km/h wind speeds.

This represents almost a 50% increase in the casualty count recently, and figures may increase as officials clear their way into previously inaccessible areas in the next few days.

Area-Specific Damage

The Westmoreland region is thought to contain the next largest count of potential fatalities, behind the southeastern parish to the southeastern area. The eye of the storm made landfall around the adjacent regions. At St Elisabeth an the vast majority of residences have been wrecked.

Seated under the facade of a heavily ruined edifice, Roy Perry said he has suffered total deprivation, but "we must maintain belief and optimism remains"

"Need to persevere. Refuse to quit," he declared.

Crop Damage

It is the same tone expressed by a local farmer, sitting in the bed of his truck selling pears, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes – the remaining harvest that was protected from the hurricane.

Regarding his agricultural land, he said: "Total devastation occurred. They all destroyed" But he immediately added: "We have to give God thanks we're alive"

Foreign Aid

Concurrently, foreign aid has now started entering into Jamaica.

United States officials declared that its Disaster Assistance Response Team had made entry. Other nations like the United Kingdom have also promised significant monetary support and necessary provisions.
