The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
