The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
