Israelis have gathered throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities delayed official memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the agreement.

A senior delegate involved in the talks revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.

The official explained the morning session ended without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the both parties.

Key Points in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the area

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence heal," she added.

In front of the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the families of the captives. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester one woman explained: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis prefer the war to finish in as payment for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the site of Nova festival, mourners gathered to honor the dead.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In the main city, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"When the night arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area said additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, health workers stated.

The territory's health ministry reported a significant number of the {territ
