Goalkeeper Mary Earps has openly declared that her freshly launched autobiography was not designed to “criticize individuals” and expressed concern that public reaction has been “misrepresented.”

Controversial Comments and Supporters’ Disapproval

The former England player, who played a key role in the tournament success, received criticism from supporters and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about former team-mate Hannah Hampton and head coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her book, Earps wrote that she told Wiegman she was “encouraging negative conduct” by bringing Hampton back to the England squad after leaving her out for being “problematic and undependable.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how some things have been distorted,” Earps told reporters.

Explaining Her Motives

Earps clearly stated that the autobiography was never intended to harm individuals.

• “I’ve not written this book to damage reputations in any shape or form.”
• “That isn’t my personality as a individual.”
• “This reflects reality. It has implications. It is not a show.”

She also discussed how female soccer has entered a space that has become “almost like performance,” where private matters are scrutinized heavily for public amusement.

Relationship with Wiegman

Earps mentioned being replaced as the starting goalkeeper before the European Championship and how that created tension with Wiegman.

She explained it was “not a rapid decline” in their dynamic—just a clash of viewpoints—and she maintains respect for the head coach.

“Certain events that happened in the summer that I wish had happened differently,” Earps added.

Personal Struggles

In her book, Earps discussed openly the bullying she suffered at during her education, describing it as a “particularly challenging” section to read again because it revived past pain.

• “I couldn’t assert myself back then.”
• “I always believed that people didn’t like me for a long time.”
• “I was trained to feel like nobody really cares.”

These feelings led to anxiety episodes, and Earps disclosed she had issues with body image and used alcohol during the global health crisis to manage emotional difficulties.

Personal Life and Future Plans

Earps openly discussed that she is in a partnership with Kitty and stated she is proud about her relationship.

She also talked about her desire to be a mother and revealed she has frozen her eggs for later fertility treatment.

“I really want to be a mother and have a family of my own,” Earps commented. “I enjoy my football career, but I hope to have a child later down the line.”

Earps characterized the egg-freezing procedure as “overwhelming and personal” and advocated for more research tailored to sports professionals undergoing similar procedures.

Throughout the interview, Earps maintained that she has no feelings of remorse about her sports path or individual actions, highlighting that she always proceeded with principle.
