Far-Right Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Next President.
After a definitive second-round vote, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Centered On Security and Immigration
Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to tackle rising insecurity and drastically restrict immigration.
He repeatedly blamed migrants, notably the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face removal.
His proposals featured Trump-inspired measures such as erecting holding facilities, high walls, security fences, and increasing the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Regional Wave
Many observers view Kast's win as aligning with a broader right-wing trend in South America, following this year's electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts further describe it as a part of the established swing of power between left and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Strong Majority
In spite of his sweeping popular vote win, Kast will not command an clear majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when various right-leaning parties are counted together.
This political reality might challenge his agenda, including a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not offered specifics.
"There are many things about how a Kast presidency will look like that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will implement them," commented a political expert.
The expert stated, "Regarding economic policy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures common for the right-wing. But the area with much less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
